I looked at various existing logos for websites similar in terms of function to our own idea of a portfolio website. Overall I discovered that most if not all were somewhat simple in terms of font, layout and design. Also I noted that no more that 2 or three colours are used so as not to confuse. The statement "Less is More" comes to mind when thinking about logo design.
